The transformation rule

Each expression of regret says the OPPOSITE of what actually happened:

Reality vs Regret

Reality: I didn't study. (negative)

Regret: I wish I had studied. (positive in the regret)


Reality: I went out yesterday. (positive)

Regret: I wish I hadn't gone out yesterday. (negative in the regret)

Practice 1 โ€” Express regret

Complete with the right regret expression
  1. We didn't meet them last night. โ†’ I wish we had met them last night. / It's a pity we didn't meet them last night.
  2. I wasn't paying attention to the lesson. โ†’ I wish I had been paying attention to the lesson. / I should have paid attention to the lesson.
  3. Why didn't I visit them? Now it's too late. โ†’ If only I had visited them! / I regret not visiting them.
  4. She sold her old car. She used to like it a lot. โ†’ She wishes she hadn't sold her old car. / She regrets selling her old car.

Use a different expression of regret with the same meaning
  1. If only I had had time to check on my sick friend. โ†’ I wish I had had time to check on my sick friend. / I regret not having time to check on my sick friend.
  2. I regret living in this neighbourhood. โ†’ I wish I didn't live in this neighbourhood. / It's a pity I live in this neighbourhood.
