Exercise 1 — Vocabulary

Fill in the blanks with the appropriate word

List: silly · funny · laughter · kidding · humour

  1. It is true that humour improves communication and relieves stress.
  2. Yesterday's show was very funny. I couldn't stop laughing.
  3. Some TV sitcoms are silly. You wouldn't laugh at all when you watch them.
  4. When the teacher fell off the chair, the students burst into laughter.
  5. Are you serious or just kidding?

Exercise 3 — Modals

Fill in the blanks with the correct modal
  1. Jamila must have done well in the exam yesterday. She was very happy after she had finished.
  2. Next weekend, I may travel to Casablanca, but I haven't decided yet.
  3. Nassima is healthy and fit. She needn't go on a diet.

Exercise 4 — Match the functions

Match each sentence with its function
  • I'm afraid, I don't get your point. → Expressing lack of understanding
  • Would you be more explicit, please? → Asking for clarification
  • "Would you mind cleaning the board?" a teacher told a student. → Expressing a request
