Writing an Informal Letter

An informal letter is written to a friend or family member. The tone is relaxed, personal, warm. Contractions, exclamations and personal expressions are all welcome.

The letter you are answering

Dear Mehdi,

My parents have finally given me their OK to spend a couple of weeks with you next summer. We'll certainly have so much fun together, won't we?

But, I'm a bit panicky about this visit. Morocco is miles away; it's a new world for me โ€” with customs and beliefs completely different from the ones we've got here in Britain. What I got through the internet didn't relieve my panic, and I still have a couple of questions in mind:

  • Shall I stay in a hotel or will you put me up?
  • What are the common ways of greeting people in your country?
  • What about table manners? Do you use both hands when you eat?
  • And clothes? Should I dress up or wear casual clothes?

I feel my dream to visit Morocco will come true at last. Till then, I count on you to tell me about the things above. That's it for now. Keep in touch.

Mary

Model reply (about 180 words)

Hi Mary,

I hope you are fine. I'm so happy to hear that you are finally coming to Morocco next summer! I've been waiting for this visit for months, and I promise you that we will have an amazing time together.

Don't worry at all about your stay โ€” of course you will stay with us, not in a hotel! My family is excited to meet you, and we have a guest room ready. As for greetings, the most common way is to shake hands and say "Salam alaykum". Close friends and relatives often kiss on the cheek, but with a foreigner, a handshake is enough.

About table manners: traditionally, Moroccans eat from a shared plate using their right hand only. But don't panic โ€” we also use spoons and forks, especially when guests are present. You'll get used to it quickly!

For clothes, just wear what you feel comfortable in โ€” casual is perfectly fine. However, when we visit my grandmother or go to traditional places, you may want to dress a little more modestly.

Can't wait to see you! Give my regards to your parents.

Love,
Mehdi

โ– Key Takeaways โ–

โ‘  Relaxed but organised

Informal doesn't mean disorganised. Keep paragraphs and a clear sequence.

โ‘ก Contractions OK

Use I'm, don't, you'll โ€” they make the letter feel natural and warm.

โ‘ข Answer all questions

If your friend asked several questions, answer ALL of them in your reply. Each missed point = lost marks.

โ– Exam tip

If the writing task says "reply to your friend", the tone MUST be informal. Using "Yours faithfully" in a friend letter loses you marks for register.
