Reported Speech
Reported speech (or indirect speech) is used to repeat what someone said without quoting them directly. It involves tense backshift, pronoun changes, and time/place adjustments.
- Tense backshift โ the verb usually moves one step into the past.
- Pronouns change โ "I" becomes "he" or "she", "you" becomes "I/me", etc.
- Time and place words change โ "today" โ "that day", "here" โ "there".

Use said (that) / told someone (that).
Examples
Direct: "I am tired." โ Reported: She said (that) she was tired.
Direct: "We have lived in Rabat for three years." โ They said they had lived in Rabat for three years.

- "I saw a great movie last night." โ Loubna said (that) she had seen a great movie the night before.
- "We have lived in Rabat for three years." โ Anas and Nada said they had lived in Rabat for three years.
- "I will continue my education in Canada." โ Najat told her classmates that she would continue her education in Canada.
- "Mark will marry next summer." โ Jack told his friends that Mark would marry the following summer.
- "Jenny can't come to our party." โ Pierre told his wife that Jenny couldn't come to their party.
- "I met one of my old friends at the beach last summer." โ Hamid said (that) he had met one of his old friends at the beach the previous summer.
- "You must do the exercises on page 9." โ Mr. Brown told his students they had to do the exercises on page 9.
- "My father went to Paris last month." โ Imane said her father had gone to Paris the previous month.
- "I'm not feeling well." โ David said (that) he wasn't feeling well.

Reporting Yes/No questions
Use asked / wanted to know + if / whether. No question mark. Normal word order.
Examples
Direct: "Do you speak English?" โ He asked me if I spoke English.
Practice
- "Can Mr. Smith come to the meeting?" โ The secretary asked if Mr. Smith could come to the meeting.
- "Has Sarah been to Rabat before?" โ Reda wanted to know if Sarah had been to Rabat before.
- "Are the children at home?" โ The man asked if the children were at home.
- "Is the teacher in class?" โ A student asked his friend if the teacher was in class.
- "Can you clean the board?" โ The teacher asked me if I could clean the board.
- "Have you done well in the exam?" โ Nancy asked Paul if he had done well in the exam.
- "Is the lesson difficult?" โ The teacher asked if the lesson was difficult.
- "Have you finished the housework?" โ The mother asked her daughter if she had finished the housework.
- "Do you enjoy watching football on TV?" โ My friend asked me if I enjoyed watching football on TV.
- "Does Sara have a job?" โ Ali asked if Sara had a job.
Keep the question word (what, where, when, why, how, who). No question mark. Normal word order.

- "Where is the train station?" โ A tourist wanted to know where the train station was.
- "What time will the train arrive?" โ A passenger wondered what time the train would arrive.
- "Why do you hate me?" โ Kamal asked Zineb why she hated him.
- "How much money do you need?" โ The father asked his daughter how much money she needed.
- "How does your friend like coffee?" โ The waiter asked me how my friend liked coffee.
- "How often do you watch TV?" โ My friend asked me how often I watched TV.
- "What will you do after class?" โ Nabil asked Nabila what she would do after class.
- "What can I do to pass the exam?" โ Nada asked what she could do to pass the exam.
- "Where did you go last summer?" โ Noura asked Reda where he had gone the previous summer.
- "Which lesson did the teacher explain yesterday?" โ A student asked his classmate which lesson the teacher had explained the day before.

Reporting Commands & Advice
Commands โ told + (not) + to + verb. Advice โ advised + (not) + to + verb. Suggestions โ suggested + V-ing.
Commands
- "Drive slowly." โ Mr. John told his son to drive slowly.
- "Don't forget to buy apples." โ The woman told her husband not to forget to buy apples.
- "Please help me with the homework." โ Youness asked his sister to help him with the homework.
- "Don't be late for the meeting." โ The manager reminded the workers not to be late for the meeting.
- "Watch out!" โ The sign warned the drivers to watch out.
Advice and suggestions
- "You should revise your lessons well." โ The teacher advised his students to revise their lessons well.
- "You'd better exercise every day." โ The doctor advised the patient to exercise every day.
- "Why don't you go home and relax?" โ Nada advised her friend to go home and relax.
- "You shouldn't eat too much at night." โ He advised his son not to eat too much at night.
- "Let's study English!" โ My friend suggested studying English.
- "Why don't we travel to Marrakech after the exams?" โ Huda suggested travelling to Marrakech after the exams.
